Hobbyist Runs Nvidia DLSS 5 on Super Mario Odyssey Without an Emulator

A hobbyist has reportedly managed to run Nvidia's DLSS 5 upscaling technology on Super Mario Odyssey without using an emulator, according to a report from French tech outlet Frandroid. The trick involves running the upscaling feature directly on the game, bypassing the need for a console emulation layer.

The report, published Tuesday, does not specify which graphics card the modder used or how the modification was achieved. However, it aligns with a broader pattern of DLSS 5 leaks and community experiments that have surfaced ahead of the technology's official release, which other outlets have said is expected on September 3.

Frandroid's coverage is part of a wave of recent reporting on DLSS 5. PhonAndroid has detailed the new features and which Nvidia graphics cards will support the technology. HardwareCooking has noted that early tests have been conducted on older GeForce RTX 20-series "Turing" cards, as well as on emulators and legacy DirectX games. Cowcotland.com has separately reported that DLSS 5 can be enabled on RTX 4000 and RTX 3000 cards, with mixed results depending on the hardware.

One notable claim from Instant Gaming News suggests that DLSS 5 will launch with a performance hit of 50 to 60 percent in certain scenarios, though the exact conditions of that benchmark are not detailed in the available reporting.

The Super Mario Odyssey example stands out because it involves a Switch title running without an emulator, which would typically be required to run console-exclusive software on a PC. The fact that a modder achieved this suggests the community is already finding ways to apply DLSS 5 beyond its intended scope.

With the official launch reportedly just days away, the key question is whether Nvidia will restrict such unofficial uses or embrace the flexibility the modding community has demonstrated.
